Description
This painting depicts the special nature of farming taro in Hawaii. Taro is a sacred plant to native Hawaiians and is considered to be an ancestor of the human race and an older brother. Taro, also called kalo, is a staple food throughout the Pacific and provides easy to digest food for the very young, the ill or elderly as well as being a food always served at luaus and present on the family table. It is a beautiful plant with heart shaped leaves and comes in hundreds of varieties. The Hanalei valley is famous for the quality of its taro and it is eaten throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
